This course provides an overview of RKI’s Fixed Systems gas detection systems playing a critical role in protecting personnel, equipment, and facilities. However, even the most advanced system will not perform as intended if it is not installed correctly. Improper detector placement, poor wiring practices, and overlooked environmental factors can lead to inaccurate readings, nuisance alarms, or complete system failure.

This training will provide practical, real-world overview of what to do and what to avoid during installation, based on common field scenarios and lessons learned. Whether you are installing a new system or evaluating an existing one, this session will help ensure your setup is safe, reliable, and aligned with industry best practices.

Installation Do’s

• Proper detector placement based on gas type (heavier vs. lighter than air)
• Understanding airflow, ventilation, and environmental factors
• Correct mounting heights and spacing guidelines
• Appropriate use of junction boxes, conduit, and cable types
• Power and signal wiring best practices (4-20 mA, Modbus, Ethernet, etc)
• Grounding and shielding techniques to reduce noise/interference
• Proper calibration and bump testing after installation
• Verifying alarm setpoints and system configuration

Installation Dont’s

• Mounting sensors too far from potential leak sources
• Running signal and power wiring together without proper shielding
• Ignoring environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, washdown areas)
• Skipping calibration or relying on factory settings only
• Improper sensor orientation or enclosure sealing
• Overlooking maintenance access and serviceability
• Using incorrect cable types or exceeding recommended distances

By the end of the course, attendees will have a solid understanding of how to design, install, program and maintain RKI fixed gas detection systems in accordance with best practices and safety standards.
