Portable Gas Detection Fundamentals & Safety
Training Class at RKI Gulf Coast Office

Location: 1609 Center Street, Deer Park, TX. 77536.  Phone: 281-993-7710
Schedule: See list of classes below

This RKI portable gas detection course provides a comprehensive introduction to gas detection hazards and the portable gas monitors used to warn and protect workers in hazardous environments. Participants will gain a foundational understanding of common gas detection terminology, typical gas hazards and where they are encountered, and how alarm setpoints such as LEL, STEL, TWA, and over-range conditions are used to enhance personal safety.

The course covers sensor technologies and selection criteria, helping users understand how different sensors detect combustible, toxic, and oxygen-deficient or enriched atmospheres. Students will learn how to properly select instruments and accessories based on application requirements.

Hands-on instruction focuses on the operation of RKI portable gas detectors, including the 04 Series, GX-3R, GX-3R Pro, GX-Force, GX-2012, GX-6000, Eagle, and Eagle 2. Topics include device features, accessories, powering instruments on and off, interpreting display readings (including Peak, STEL, and TWA values), gases detected by standard and optional sensors, proper use as a personal monitor, and correct sampling techniques for ambient air and confined spaces.

The course also introduces basic maintenance and calibration practices to ensure reliable instrument performance. Participants will learn inspection and cleaning procedures, sensor and filter replacement, calibration kit selection, and the proper execution of bump tests and manual calibrations. The training concludes with hands-on calibration exercises, both manually and using automated calibration and docking stations.

By the end of the course, participants will have the knowledge and practical skills needed to confidently operate, maintain, and calibrate portable gas detection instruments to support safe work practices.
