Applications Engineer

RKI Instruments, Inc., an innovative gas detection company located in Union City, is seeking a focused individual with strong technical and interpersonal communication skills to provide our customers with technical support for sales and service of both RKI Instruments portable and continuous monitoring gas detection instruments. The Applications Engineer is responsible for the product applications engineering function at the company. The Applications Engineer is a key member of the company’s sales and marketing efforts and interfaces with many personnel and departments within the company as well as outside sales representatives, distributors, and end users of our products.


Receiving and making telephone calls as well as emails relating to sales, applications and technical support for the company’s products and services. Timely follow up is essential. Sales efforts include prospect qualification, solving needs and generating and following up on sales quotations. Also will conduct product training both at regular in-house training sessions, through webinars and in some cases at customer locations. The Applications Engineer is also expected to make outside sales calls and /or technical applications support as needed.


A. Education and Training

A Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from a four (4) year University is strongly preferred. Other technical degrees may be considered. Experience in sales, customer service and/or support and problem solving is desirable but not required. General computer proficiency is required in either PC or Macintosh platforms; preferably in both. In addition, strong interpersonal communication skills (both verbal and written) are required.

B. Technical Requirements

Applications Engineer’s function involves a thorough understanding of the customer’s requirements, analyzing all pertinent data and solving the customer’s needs. The ideal candidate will also have an initial fundamental, and later, thorough understanding of gas detection equipment and gas characteristics. The Applications Engineer will require a proficient working knowledge of gas detection equipment, sensors, basic electronic signals, as well as the physical properties of a variety of toxic, combustible and inert gases and compounds commonly found in industry

Senior Assembler

RKI Instruments Inc., a growing and innovative gas detection company located in Union City is seeking a Senior Assembler to join our Production Department. This person must be a team player, willing to help wherever help is needed within the Production team. The position entails ability to multi-task and prioritize effectively. This person will be asked to undergo a background check.

Assembling and testing gas detectors
Hands-on working in Production Department as needed to meet customer requirements.
Assist the Manager in organizing the workflow of other employees.
Oversee and coach employees.
Identify issues in efficiency and suggest improvements.
Enforce safety policies and procedures (both in-house and regulatory) to decrease the potential for employee injuries on the job.
Ensure all resources and assets are used efficiently and correctly.
Ensure the safe use of equipment and schedule regular maintenance.
Follows Company policies and procedures.
Interface with all other departments as needed.

2+ years of electromechanical, PCBA, manufacturing process and assembly experience.
Posses applicable experience, skills, and knowledge to perform all aspects of job; rotates through all job responsibilities.
Works with sense of urgency to meet needs of customers.
Takes responsibility for actions, results, and mistakes.
Ability to identify issues in efficiency and suggest improvements.
3+ years related experience in a supervisor position or equivalent work-related experience desired.
Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or related field a plus.

Able to operate power tools and drill press.
Able to read assembly drawings and technical notes.
Basic Measurement and gauge use skills
Good soldering skills.
Good computer skills.
Team building skills.
Problem solving skills using disciplined methods to identify root causes (i.e. 5 Why).
